What is a Strafe Drive and why would I want one?

A strafe drive enables you to travel sideways at high speeds. It makes it impossible for friend or foe to calculate where you are going, thus making it virtual impossible to hit you when you are in combat. It can also be used to get out of the way of other ships to avoid collisions.
